How this Ministry came about...
John and Karen Louis feel blessed to have been located in Southeast Asia for over 20 years, and they are grateful for all their friends in the ICOC who have made that possible, including many friends around the world, especially the Southeast Asia Core Group, as well as the amazing staff and lay leadership of the Singapore church. For the past eight years, the Louis and their staff have been trained in many aspects of counselling and communication, and have been integrating their skills into a unique toolbox of both biblical and therapeutic expertise. In order to meet the needs of their congregation in Singapore, John and Karen put together several workshops for marriage and family, which have profoundly helped their ministries in Asia. "Good Enough Parenting" (GEP) is a 7-part parenting programme, originally conceived as strengthening programs for their members, but have now evolved into also being evangelistic in nature. As others have heard about the success of these workshops, the Louises have received numerous requests to equip other leaders in the ICOC to be able to replicate these programmes.

John and Karen were interviewed by Mr Steven Chia and Ms Suzanne Jung of Channel NewsAsia in Primetime Morning. Click here to watch >>>

"Good Enough Parenting"

Research has shown that when core needs are not met during the formative years of a child, "Lifetraps" (schemas) will develop. These core needs are:

1) Basic Safety
2) Guidance & Protection
3) Stable Base & Predictability
4) Reasonable Limits
5) Love, Nurturing & Attention
6) Empathy & Validation of Feelings
7) Acceptance & Praise
8) Faith (Spirituality)

While no one's parenting can ever be perfect, "Good Enough Parenting" offers a step-by-step guide on how parents can learn to meet these core needs, and provide parenting that is "good-enough" to prevent Lifetraps from developing in their children. "Good Enough Parenting" - a series of seven parenting workshops - was developed by John and Karen Louis and is based on Schema Therapy founded by Dr. Jeffrey Young.

"In a world of too much information, 'Good Enough Parenting' uses movies to teach parents how to MEET CORE NEEDS, and, at the same time, how to avoid passing down their own dysfunctional behaviors. Schema Therapy has been successful with adults, but I have always wanted to see someone do something on preventing schemas, or Lifetraps, in children, and here it is!"
