Alaska goldAs the New Year begins, it is always an opportune time to reflect on the year that has come to pass. When the Great Land Christian Church of Alaska looks back on 2012, we remember a year of faith, growth, opportunity, and God’s powerful hand moving it all.

The Great Land Christian Church, with churches in both Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska, has experienced very exciting growth over the past few years, with over 60 baptisms in the last 3 years. 2012 saw 27 baptisms in almost every ministry of the church! The campus ministry continues to thrive at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), and now has even expanded to Alaska Pacific University (APU). This is the first time that we have had a presence at APU, and we are very excited to see how God moves there, as well as at the UAA and the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Speaking of Fairbanks, the church there has more than tripled in size in 2012, and the disciples there are continuing to grow in their faith and conviction. It has been a very exciting year! In fact, the Anchorage church has seen so many new people added to God’s family that we have outgrown our current building! 2013 ushers in not only a new year, but a new location for the church in Anchorage that will have more room for a family that is constantly growing!

Not only has the whole body grown in 2012, but in response to so much growth, we have also added to our staff and appointed deacons for the first time! Under the leadership of Ray and Stephany Nadon, Nick and Natalie Morrill were added to the full-time staff positions in July, as well two part-time campus interns. Three deacons were appointed as well, which marks the first time that the Great Land Christian Church has ever had deacons! Brian Walch is the Deacon of Children and Families, Ed Paredes is the Deacon of Hospitality, and Jeff San Juan is the Deacon of Young Christians. Together, the team at GLCC, with God’s blessing, continues to help people know Christ.

2012 was also a landmark year for GLCC, as August of 2012 was the celebration of the church’s 20th year anniversary! The celebration was a great time to honor those who made the sacrifices necessary to plant the church in 1992, as well as a time to celebrate our growth over the years.

In addition to being a great year of growth, 2012 was also a great year of service. The Alaska Chapter of HOPE worldwide continues to offer high-impact services to those in need. This year, HOPE continued its service to the Anchorage School District, providing staffing for afterschool programs in the most economically disadvantaged schools in the district. In the Fall of 2012, Anchorage took on five One Year Challenge participants who are learning the importance of service in ministry as they serve in these afterschool programs. As well, Alaska served as the host site for HOPE Youth Corps for the second year in a row! Our HYC team of volunteers provided renovations, organization, and day camps for the youth of the Boys and Girls Clubs in Kotzebue and Kivalina, Alaska. The programs were a great success! Many lasting memories were made for both the youth served and those who volunteered!

All in all, 2012 has been a fantastic year for the Great Land Christian Church! And as we rely upon God, we are faithful that 2013 will be EVEN BETTER! (John 14:12-14, our theme scripture for 2012)
