More than a decade ago, Wyndham Shaw and a few others decided to focus on raising up elders throughout our fellowship of churches. Once elderships were appointed, they realized the elderships needed to have ligament connections throughout God's kingdom, not just within their own churches.
The idea was born to host a yearly Elders and Wives Retreat for the Northeast US. As word spread, interest grew and more elderships wanted to be part of this gathering, what started as a small group of elders has grown to a group of over 100 that now includes elder candidates along with their wives.
When Melva Smith first became a disciple of Christ 23 years ago in Springfield, Massachusetts, she had no idea what life might hold for her. She only knew that she needed Christ and wanted to follow him forever. Melva was inspired by the change she witnessed in her sister, Claudette, who had been baptized not long before her. Naturally, as a married woman with two pre-teens, Melva began her spiritual journey full of faith and hope that her children would be inspired by her own example and would soon follow her as she followed Christ. Without a partner in the faith at home, Melva valiantly fought alone to teach her children the word of God, faithfully bringing them to church with her at every opportunity.
How can we be excellent at work and for the Lord? This struggle, to find the balance, is a challenge for many disciples in churches across the world. But as God has shown us through the lives of many of the great cloud of witnesses, men such as Daniel, Nehemiah, and Joseph have achieved high levels of success in the world as well as in God's kingdom.
