My Family and Jesus: 30 Years and Five Churches

Recently, I had the unique opportunity to walk a few blocks through downtown Dallas with Roger Lamb. We had met several times over the years but never really had the chance to get to know each other. As we walked he asked me about my family, to which I replied, "That's a long story." Normally when you hear someone make that statement what follows isn't always pleasant, but in our case this could not be further from the truth. Ours is a story of incredible faith, persecution, perseverance and transformation that spans over a period of 30 years and counting.

The Day I Hugged the Drunk Driver Who Almost Killed Me

"Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” – ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4:31-32‬

October 18, 2016 represented two years of waiting. Two years spent in and out of hospitals, months of physical and occupational therapy, six procedures to date (one spinal, one vascular and four abdominal surgeries) and a seventh, another back surgery, scheduled for November after my honeymoon.

A Reflection in Harvard Yard

This was a such a surreal and faith-building moment for me as I sat in the courtyard outside Mather House at Harvard University this summer. Over 30 years ago, my mom (Catherine Cattan Shump) was a student at Harvard University.

Thank God that He Guides Me Throughout Life: Baptism in Ekaterinburg

My name is Olga. When I was 33 years old, I decided to unite with God through baptism in the Orthodox church. I got baptized, however it didn't change the fact that I had never read the Bible nor had I thought about it. I didn't know what God was expecting from me in that moment or what Jesus' teachings were all about. Only later did I realize that I was far from the truth.

His Perfect Process

God's process is not man's process

In industrial engineering and manufacturing, the process of creating a product is keenly scrutinized -- by a team usually using some type of Lean Management or Six Sigma process improvement strategy -- to find out the best way to begin the product's cycle of creation to completion, beginning to end, over and over again, so that whatever product is manufactured is done as-close-to-perfectly as possible. The goal is to finish with as close to 0% imperfection as possible.

It is by God’s grace and mercy that we can continually grow in our understanding, and have the chance to live again through Christ. Our lives on earth are fraught with many trials. But our faith teaches us that that when we overcome them, we not only live eternally with our heavenly father, but we can learn the secret of enjoying our lives in the here and now.
