Kuan Sing is the story of a boy from an "unchurched" family, who came to church at 10yrs old, and grew up to become a disciple of Jesus.

Kuan Sing started to come to church when he was 10 years old. His step brother would bring him along to join all church activities since then. Kuan Sing comes from a broken family - his father had re-married and was an alcoholic. Since young, he was exposed to domestic violence. Unfortunately Kuan Sing became very insecure and quiet, and was struggling with his self-esteem.

However, he was very consistent in his desire to be part of the spiritual family - the Kids Kingdom, hangouts, church fun-time, etc., every week. When he was old enough to join the youth ministry about 3 years ago, he did not hesitate to be with the teens every Friday evening. Initially, a youth worker would fetch him to the Friday devo; eventually he decided to be independent and took public transport, although he was struggling financially.

When Kuan Sing was 15 years old in 2006, I decided to approach him to study the bible during the end of school holiday. We started with character studies and other lessons which helped him to understand God’s love for him and be more secure as a person. The studies lasted the entire two-month holiday and beyond. Kuan Sing and I would get time consistently to study the bible, share about the progress of his quiet time and went through questions he had from a series of “Youth Devotionals” booklets.

About one and a half years ago, he was missing on a particular Friday. We discovered that his father had become drunk at home. Kuan Sing was not allowed to come out of the house and was crying over the phone when contacted. Some youth workers went to his house but the lights were off. They just sent him SMS/texts to give moral support to him and assure him. Youth workers and the teens also wrote cards to encourage him. He came to the next Friday devo and he was an example to the rest of the teens for his perseverance.

This year was a year Kuan Sing showed good progress in his walk with God and character growth. He was more consistent in his quiet time and more open about his own life. He also took initiative to arrange for his own transportation to come to the youth devo and to the bible studies before the Sunday church service (if necessary). It has been encouraging to see his growth to be a more joyful and expressive person who really appreciates what others do for him.

Kuan Sing continued to come to all the youth devos on Saturday and Sunday services although his SPM (“O” Level - a final exam at the end of high school that is very stressful) exam was around the corner. He would study the bible with Vincent Sim (Evangelist) and two youth workers – Marcus Chan & myself, as often as possible.

When he finished the “baptism” study about 3 weeks ago, he wanted to be baptized at the following youth devo. This was in the midst of his SPM exam! When Vincent counted the cost of discipleship with him, he was positive of his repentance of his sins and took the challenges Vincent gave him to his heart. Finally he was baptized on 15 Nov 2008! Amen!!

Today, not only he is a great disciple, he also shines in his school – being the top in his class and has won a prize in a inter-school badminton competition this year.

Kuan Sing is the story of a boy from an "unchurched" family, who came to church at 10yrs old, and grew up to become a disciple of Jesus. Truly God is awesome and to God be the glory!
