A couple is preferred, with the spouse assuming part or full time responsibilities as she prefers. We are seeking a couple willing to make a long-term commitment, to shepherd a congregation with varied degrees of maturity, dedication and commitment. Salary is negotiable, including some paid expenses and benefits, and will depend on amount of experience and degree of participation by spouse. We are preferably seeking a young-to-middle age couple (with or without children) willing to take on all the rigors of running a full-time ministry, complete with all of the heart-felt rewards, as well as the occasional bumps and disappointments of such a mission.
The Tulsa International Church of Christ was planted by the St. Louis International Church of Christ in 1992. The current membership is at approximately 60 disciples, down from a high of approximately 90 members some three years ago. The remaining 60 are a diversified and dedicated group, intent on keeping God’s kingdom alive and thriving in Tulsa. The church has an energetic board of four, and three hard working deacon couples. We currently meet in leased space, but have plans to purchase or construct our own facility within the next year or so. The church has a weekly budget of approximately $3000.
Tulsa, Oklahoma is located in what is known as the "Green Country" of northeastern Oklahoma, with numerous lakes, hiking trails, and camping facilities. Once known as "the oil capitol of the world," Tulsa is now a delightful mix of rich culture, colorful history, terrific shopping, and lively nightlife. It sports some of the nation’s nationally recognized museums, like the Gilcrease Museum, the world’s largest and most comprehensive collection of fine artifacts, and archives of the American West. Or one can enjoy the Italian-style villa that was once the home to a millionaire oilman and is now the renowned Philbrook Museum, filled with Italian renaissance art, ancient and classical pieces, and extensive native American collections.
Tulsa is a wonderful place to raise a family. It is small enough to be friendly, yet large enough to have most of the attractions of a major city. Its Riverside Park is listed as one of the largest parks in America, that has walking and biking trails that continue on for miles along the Arkansas River. In nearby Jenks is a world class aquarium Within an hours drive is the well known Wolroc Museum, built by Frank Phillips of ConocoPhillips, with its collection of drive-through animals, camping grounds, and oil field artifacts.
The city of Tulsa is home to minor league baseball and hockey, and arena football. The Tulsa State Fair is among the best in the country. Tulsa Community College has the highest enrollment of any college in the state. Both the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University have Tulsa campuses. It is also home to the University of Tulsa and Oral Roberts University (both leading private institutions). If you enjoy culture, there is the Tulsa Performing Arts Center, the Tulsa Symphony, and the Tulsa Ballot. The Tulsa zoo was voted best zoo in the nation in 2006. Tulsa has, in recent years, diversified its economy into one of oil, aerospace, finance, and many other fields.
If shopping is your forte, Tulsa has three large malls, and a wide variety of strip malls. Nearby Jenks, a Tulsa suburb, at one time had more antique shops than any other town in the country. Although it no longer holds that title, one can still spend days going through the many shops. For the preppy, there is the Cherry Street district or Brookside, both with trendy restaurants and shops. You will not get bored in Tulsa.
Many of the Tulsa church members enjoy camping and fishing. There are numerous camping sites within easy driving distance. Lake Keystone, with lakeside campsites and restroom facilities, is a fifteen minute drive. Other campsites have hiking trails, horseback riding, living museums, fishing, boating, swimming canoeing, and cave exploring. Our church usually has at least one service during the summer at one of the campsites.
For those interested, we would like to invite you to first a telephone interview, then possibly an in-person interview in Tulsa, followed by an evening of dining and socializing with a few church leaders, then preaching on Sunday. The church will obviously pay all expenses for the interviewing process. Our goal is to have someone in place by September or October. Those interested should contact Dee Jay Berry at deejaykd@sbcglobal.net or clarencedill@aol.com to arrange an interview.
