It is encouraging to see that in spite of our currently slumping economy disciples continue to give generously to support world missions ... Here is a quick run-down of recent missions contribution announcements from our US churches. We would love to hear from other churches in and out of the US so we can give glory to God for his generosity in our blessings and the giving hearts of the disciples. It is encouraging to see that in spite of our currently slumping economy disciples continue to give generously to support world missions. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that most churches' special missions contributions have increased over the last few years. For instance, the Eurasian Missions Society recently reported that their contributions from the supporting churches have increased almost 30% since 2004.

Here is a quick run-down of some recent missions contribution announcements from our US churches. Click on the city name to see the related link:

Columbia, South Carolina

"Once again God blessed the Columbia church in an amazing way last Sunday as we celebrated our 2008 Missions contribution. With a goal of $145,000, so far we have collected over $173,000 for support of churches in Africa, the Caribbean and a new church planting right here in South Carolina!

"This year's contribution was expanded to include specific amounts for the new church planting in Clemson this fall, a new initiative to strengthen churches and raise up leadership in the eastern Caribbean, as well as continuing our support for our adopted churches in Southern Africa. We are truly thankful to all of our members who sacrificed and some who undoubtably gave 'beyond what they were able' in order to see God's word preached both here and abroad. We stand in awe of what God can do when we seek to please him and surrender ourselves to his will."
"We collected over $115,000 at our missions contribution last Sunday! This is up from $37,000 last year! With this offering we will be planting the Clemson church and continuing in our support for the Caribbean churches."
"Special Contribution 2008 -- We have given $133,000 so far in cash and pledges for our Special Contribution for 2008! (This is a huge jump from last year when we gave roughly $80,000 on the day). Praise God that we could all give in such a generous and cheerful way. We look forward to the money blessing the churches in Africa, as well as our ministries here."

Chicago, Illinois:

$450,000 (75% of goal) collected so far. Funds will go to support Eurasian Missions.

St. Louis, Missouri:

Latest: $58,988.21, plus $11,127 in pledges to be collected by July 20. (Editor's Note: This appears to be more than 4.5 times their weekly contribution.)

Worcester, Massachusetts:

"Our goal is $54,000, which is 10 times our regular contribution. To date, we have given $11,376. Please be praying and planning so we make our goal."

"Please mark your calendars from May 18 to June 15! During the month we will be collecting our missions contribution. This year our Special Missions Contribution will go to support the work in St. Petersburg, Russia and their family of churches. The foreign mission work will be our first priority followed by other needs. The remainder of the donations will go to support the following endeavors:
  • Summer Internship Program
  • Teen and Campus Ministries
  • Thousand Oaks Ranch
  • Disciples Today Website
"The goal to meet these needs will be 10 times our budget of $17,500 or $175,000. This will enable us to advance the gospel in various ways as we sacrifice for these causes."
"As in the past, we want to continue our support of the work in Asia with the churches we are supporting - churches in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. To those churches we want to give a total of $94,000 or about 4X our regular weekly contribution.
"We also realize that in Denver and Colorado there is much that needs to be done. Therefore we are excited to announce the establishment of a special fund for our very own Colorado School of Missions.
"This fund and the school it will establish will help support interns for our Colorado campus ministries and to help raise up and prepare leaders for future Colorado church plantings. In addition we will continue in our support of Fort Collins from this fund. Our goal is to raise 6X our regular weekly contribution to be put into this fund.
"Therefore, our prayer for the Special Missions’ contribution will be 10X our regular weekly contribution. Anything over that amount will be put into a general fund to meet a variety of needs here in Denver."
"The Shoreline Church of Christ, along with the Milwaukee Church of Christ, Antelope Valley Church of Christ, and parts of the Central Region Church of Christ, are working together to collect money to support the Baltic-Nordic Mission Alliance. The main goal of the Mission Alliance is to provide financial assistance to the churches in the Baltic and Nordic regions, which consist of the churches in Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Denmark, and other parts of the Soviet Union ...
"The Shoreline Church of Christ's annual special contribution will be on Sunday, June 22nd. Each working individual is encouraged to contribute ten times as much as their weekly offering in order to reach Shoreline's goal of $25,000.00. Anything over the targeted goal will be used to hire two interns who can help build up and inspire Shoreline's Campus Ministry."

"We are pleased to announce that our annual special contribution for the New York City Church of Christ will be collected on Sunday, June 22, 2008.

"As in previous years we plan on giving $600,000 to our foreign missions, specifically Africa and the Caribbean. However because we also want to work on rebuilding the local churches within the New York City Church of Christ, the Elders and Ministry Staff have decided to only fund 50% of the mission goal through our 2008 Special Contribution collection. The remainder will come from funds designated for mission purposes, set aside when the ACES organization dissolved in 2003.

"This means any amount given over $42,000 will be used to rebuild and strengthen the Bronx Region (one week’s contribution will also be deducted from the total Special Contribution collected for the weekly budget).

"Your generosity and sacrifice throughout the years are deeply appreciated. We know that God will bless our giving for Special Contribution 2008."

Editor's Note: As many more churches plan on giving their special missions contributions over the next few months, please be praying that everyone will meet their goals and the needs of the mission churches will be met and even exceeded.
