by Roger Lamb -- Disciples Today  -  Thursday, 22 May 2008

“We’re not retiring as much as we’re rewiring.” Bob Gempel shared at the HOPE worldwide Global Summit. In a model example of leadership transition, Bob and Pat now move into their new roles as ambassadors for HOPEww.

As founders of HOPEww, Bob has served as President and CEO and Pat as Executive Vice President. Randy Jordan, former COO, General Counsel and Vice President was installed as the new CEO by the HOPEww Board.

Randy shared with the audience his respect for Bob and Pat in how they have led HOPEww with the utmost integrity, passion and sacrifice and how they initiated the transition. The entire management team and board asked the Gempels to remain involved in HOPEww as much as they could and to remain on the Board of Directors.

The Global Summit was attended by several hundred from around the world and included a fitting tribute to the Gempels who founded HOPEww as a charity arm of the International Churches of Christ in 1991. With only three small projects to begin, God has blessed this non-profit to serve over one million people every year on 6 continents with a wide variety of services that maintain the highest of quality standards. Bob and Pat were presented with the very first Spirit of HOPE Award.

HOPEww has become one of the most respected global charities including the highest 4 Star rating by Charity Navigator for the 6th consecutive time. Only 29 NGO's have ever received this honor this many times. In recognition of their heart, their work and their integrity, HOPEww has formed partnerships with these organizations over the last few years: The American Red Cross, Wal-Mart, Coca Cola, Emory University and Rotary International. They receive grants from numerous organizations including US AID, etc.

The Gempels, Randy Jordan and Frank Kim, Chairman of the HOPEww Board of Directors gave the credit to God for blessing their efforts and to the volunteer core of HOPEww, the members of the International Churches of Christ. The donations from the ICOC churches supports the administration of HOPEww which allows them to build global partnerships and secure grants to fund programs to serve the poor. For every dollar given by the churches, HOPEww multiplies that dollar 20 times in other funds for programs. They are also considered a high value charity since 91% of their funds are used for programs.

God certainly is the master of taking our mustard seeds of faith and growing them into mighty trees that feed others. This is the story of the church, a disciple's life and of HOPE worldwide.
