International Apologetics Conference in Chicago PDF Print Email
by Dr. John Oakes -- San Diego, California  -  Saturday, 17 May 2008

On June 6-8, 2008, the Apologetics Research Society (ARS) will hold its second annual International Apologetics Conference at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Illinois. Our theme this year will be "Christianity & Other World Religions,"

As part of our conference we will be hosting a debate with the premise, "Judaism, Christianity, or Islam: Which Is the True Legacy of Abraham," in which each participant will tell us about their religion (e.g., the central truth claims), defend the truth of their religion, and show why it, more than the other sister faiths, has stayed faithful to God's revelation based on the faith of Abraham.

Christianity in the twenty-first century cannot avoid confronting the questions posed by the diversity of religions. The Christian life cannot be lived in a socio-cultural or religious cocoon, so it is no longer sufficient for Christians to know only what their Bible says or how to live Christian lives.

They must develop the capacity to critically evaluate alternative religious traditions and worldviews, and to cultivate the skills necessary to participate fully and responsibly as Christians in religiously plural societies. This year's attendees can expect to receive expert teaching from leading authorities on apologetics, theology, and philosophy.

Last year we were privileged to host many outstanding academics, including Midwest Secretary-Treasurer of the Evangelical Theological Society (ETS) Dr. Robert Kurka of Lincoln Christian College and Seminary, Professor of New Testament and Director of Institute for the Study of Archaeology and Religion Dr. John Wilson of Pepperdine University, neuroscientist Dr. John Beggs of Indiana University, bioengineer Dr. Tom Hedman of University of Southern California (now University of Texas, Austin), Chemistry professor and Bible teacher John Oakes and international Bible teacher Dr. Douglas Jacoby, who debated Dr. Michael Shermer at this event on God's existence. The conference attracted more than 300 people from all over the United States and Mexico.

This year Classes will include; Philosophical and Religious Implications of Neuroscience Research, Judaism and Christian Apologetics, Radiometric Techniques and the Age of the Earth, Apologetics and Eastern Religion. Christianity and Islam, A Different Name or a Different God? How Worldview Apologetics Helps Us Answer, The Question." Adam, Eve and Christianity and more.

Field trips are planned to the Oriental Institute Museum, the Field Museum and a tour of both a Synagogue and a Mosque.

Debate: "Which is the True Legacy of Abraham?" Christian apologist Dr. Douglas Jacoby, Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, and Muslim scholar Shabir Ally will discuss and debate the Christian, Jewish, and Muslim prospective on the place of Abraham in religious history.
