One of the great charges that God has given to his people is to bring up our children in the training and instruction of the Lord (Eph. 6:4). This instruction goes all the way back to Deuteronomy 6, when God reminded the Israelites of the importance of teaching their children about being the people of God. In that passage, God reminds His people of six important aspects of that instruction, although there are certainly more. First, they must have a God without rivals (v. 4). Second, they must love God (v. 5) with their will (heart), emotion (soul), and actions (strength). Third, the word of God must be seared on and in their will (v. 6). Fourth, they must teach the word of God to their children because it was their responsibility (v. 7). Fifth, they were to clearly mark their home as God’s territory in every aspect of their family life (v. 9). Finally, they should not get so involved in life and their prosperity and activities that they forget about God (vv. 10-15).
The challenge for God's people is to be diligent in training and teaching their children in these areas, as well as the other areas that are necessary in order to prepare our children to live as Christians in our secular society.
Surely teaching and training our children can be exciting and rewarding, but it can also be challenging and even intimidating. One of the common struggles that parents have is that they deeply desire to teach their children biblical truths, but just don’t feel that they are up to the task or don’t have the resources.
Disciples Today is deeply committed to helping parents and equipping them with the resources that we need in order to fulfill God’s command to teach and train our children in the full instruction of God’s word. We are currently soliciting all materials that you might have in the areas of parenting, lessons, family devotionals, etc., so that we can create an archive of resources. We are particularly looking for creative articles and devotionals to add to the wonderful, but sparse resources that are currently available. Please send any materials, whether they are written lessons, videos, audios, or anything else that you have created; the more creative the better.
What’s more, we’re not just looking for completed items. Do you have any great ideas that you would like to work on, or even a wonderful idea that you don’t quite feel able to complete yourself, but would still be a great concept for someone else to develop? We want those too.
Please e-mail all materials and ideas to miburns@sbcglobal.net. |
