Here are some scriptures validating the principle that it is good for your soul to remember your conversion story and the circumstances surrounding it.

Take some time to write down your own conversion experience. One of the most inspiring things you can do is recall what God has done for you in the past - whether it be 2, 4, 7 or 20 years ago! We so often forget what our lives were truly like when God called us and we made the decision to make Jesus Lord of our lives.

There is also another very biblical use of your personal life testimony – to impact others’ to lead them closer to a relationship with God! I believe that this should be an uplifting and faith-giving exercise. If you have made it any length of time as a disciple, you have grown!

Some examples of people in the Bible recalling their past lives:

1 Timothy 1:13-16 (Paul)
Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life.

Galatians 1:13-16 (Paul)
For you have heard of my previous way of life in Judaism, how intensely I persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it. I was advancing in Judaism beyond many Jews of my own age and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers. But when God, who set me apart from birth[a] and called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles…

Mark 5: 18-20 (The Demoniac)
As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. Jesus did not let him, but said, "Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you." So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.

John 4:28-29 (The Samaritan woman)
Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, "Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?"

Ask yourselves these questions just to get the creative juices flowing:
  • Ask someone who knew you back then - "What was I like?"
  • What was the nature of your character before you started living by Jesus’ standard? In the area of purity? In the area of selflessness? In the areas of friendliness/shyness? In the area of helping and serving?
  • Were you in some sort of difficult life-situation when you began studying the bible?
  • What were your friendships like? How deep were they?
  • What were the relationships with your family members like?
  • What was your mental state like before you started having an active prayer life?
  • How has God changed your friendships? Marriage?
  • What areas has God helped you to grow in? (ex: boldness, honesty, healthy habits, marriage)
  • How has God helped you surmount difficult situations?
Keep your conversion story close to you…in your desk drawer, in a notebook. Add to it, revise it and shape it as memories come back. Continue to write your own story of faith as God leads you through it. And always give God the glory and praise for all he has done!
