N. Illinois University - Gale Dubowski: A Legacy of LoveEditor’s Note: Gayle Dubowski and four of her Northern Illinois University classmates were tragically killed on February 14, 2008 when a gunman stormed into their classroom and opened fire. Gayle was a true friend of those in need and a supporter of HOPE worldwide’s mission. Her legacy of love continues to inspire us.

Gayle Dubowski was a girl full of surprises. One of the things that surprised her mother and me when she enrolled in classes at Northern Illinois University was her choice of foreign language for study: Russian. We knew that she was interested in languages and linguistics, but had never guessed that Russian would be a language of interest to her. Over time, it became clear that she dreamed of traveling the globe, and seeing the world. Along the way, she hoped to spend time in Ukraine and Russia, to encourage people in the churches there, and assist in caring for orphans as she heard that HOPE worldwide has been doing. It was this idea, we believe, that spawned her desire to study the Russian language.

Following Gayle’s untimely death in the shooting at NIU, her cousins Alisha and George Balogi, and Christian Ramaker, came together to collaborate on a song that would express their feelings and help heal our grieving family; and the song “Hey Love (Gayle’s Song)” was born. Combining their talents as musicians, vocalists, and lyricists with George’s training as a professional recording engineer, they were able to put together this song in time to present it at Gayle’s funeral service on the morning of February 20th. Following the funeral, a number of people asked them if they could have copies of the song for themselves. And so, the idea was born that perhaps this song could help raise funds to help a cause that Gayle believed in: supporting HOPE worldwide’s efforts on behalf of orphans in Russia and Ukraine.

Our family would love nothing more than to keep Gayle’s hopes and dreams of helping children in need come true. Please visit Gayle’s memorial song page that George and Alisha have put together on Myspace:
