HOPE worldwide Afghanistan - Medical Assistance Needed! PDF Print Email

HOPE worldwide AfghanistanDear friends,
I hope this email finds all of you well. Mary and I are doing well here in Kabul and our work is progressing. For many years now we have been striving to relieve the maternal and infant mortality rate here in Afghanistan through various kinds of support for Malalai Maternity Hospital.

This hospital sees 80-110 births per day as well as numerous other GYN procedures. Unfortunately, very little international aid funding has come its way. Last year HWW was able to gain funding and construct a new Emergency Department for the hospital. At the same time we have been pursuing funds to provide a one-year mentoring/training program for 12 Afghan physicians in Emergency OB/GYN medicine. This would be hands-on intensive training. We have just been granted a substantial grant from the U.S. Government to make this happen. The program calls for 2 experienced OB/GYN physician positions for 12 months each. Experience here in Afghanistan has taught the humanitarian aid community that for this kind of program physicians coming for one month or a similar short period are not effective in changing the behavior of Afghan physicians. Consequently, we can only utilize those who can commit to at least a six month period of time in Afghanistan. Staying the entire year is even better.

We have a couple of physicians already in mind who are more than qualified for these positions. However, due to certain family obligations, it may not be possible for them to commit to this program. Consequently, we are asking your help to find qualified and experienced OB/GYN physicians who would like to consider this opportunity. Here are some of the particulars:

  1. A small monthly salary would be available from the program, but it should be understood that this salary will in no way match salaries in the western world
  2. International travel is covered by the program
  3. Housing is provided by the program
  4. Meals are provided by the program
  5. Security measures are provided by the program

Please circulate this as you see fit and have interested parties contact me directly and include an updated CV and the dates that they might be available. Thank you so much for your help.

Sincerely,

DAN ALLISON
