As a family (our children are 20, 17, 17, and 8) we have been thinking, praying, and talking about what life must be like for the people of Haiti, and particularly for our brothers and sisters in Port-au-Prince. We had another family devo this past Sunday after we had taken the collection for Haiti at church.

First we watched the latest video posted on icochotnews. The sharing by Jorel Claude, the evangelist of the church in Port-au-Prince moved us to tears. He refers to the passage in 1 Kings 17 in which the widow of Zarephath had so little for herself and her son, yet she cooked for Elijah and God blessed her abundantly.

When we sacrifice and give up everything God provides. The brothers and sisters in Haiti have so little yet the little they have is being shared with others in their community. Mark my husband led the devo and we studied this passage together. As Jorel was speaking on the video we could hear the Christians singing in the background. It was really convicting.

We then prayed (there were many tears) and talked about our gratitude towards God. Mark spoke about the need for us to sacrifice and think of others. Our kids gave most of their savings to the collection. They felt that whatever they would have bought with that money (video games, DVDs, etc) did not seem very crucial in the face of the need of our brothers and sisters in Haiti.
