| Using Your Words: To Share or Swear? |

I swore like a sailor before I became a Christian. In fact, when the girl who studied the Bible with me approached me to come to church, I was so excited (and pleased), that I immediately cursed….and accepted her invitation. Needless to say, she wasn’t sure if I was going to curse her out or what! I was so accustomed to swearing all the time and using it for emphasis in my daily speaking, I didn’t even think about it. It was hard to get myself out of the habit, and it took several weeks, but I decided that if I wanted to please God and be pure in my mind and heart, I needed to stop. Also, I felt as though I wanted people to see I was different, and in college, not swearing is different! That was 14 years ago!
1 Pe 1:13
Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy." Holiness and worldliness do not mix together – holy means “having a spiritually pure quality” or “Set apart to the service or worship of God”
1 Cor 6:19
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.
The tongue is part of your body so we must bring it under obedience to God too
James 1:26
If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. Our tongues can take us down roads that devalue all the good we do as Christians
1 Peter 4:11
If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen As a Christian, your tongue is not your own anymore, your aim is to speak the very words of God. Do you want worldly standards or Godly standards? (See 1 Cor 10:2-3, 2 Cor 5:16, Eph 2:1-2)
Galatians 5:9
"A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough." What yeast are you offering the world by using worldly language? One person can influence others. 1 Corinthians 2:11-15
For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man's judgment…But we have the mind of Christ. When we are trying to live the life of a disciple, we live to please Jesus. Once we are baptized, we receive the Holy Spirit. We then want to speak words that are spiritual. Are swears spiritual words or are they of the world? The spiritual man or woman makes a spiritual decision on this. “We have the mind of CHRIST.”
