“By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another" (John 13:34).
Today is our 10th spiritual birthday (Thanks, Veronica, for being right there with me). As I reflect on the last decade, I am moved by God’s love for me and the love of all the brothers and sisters that have crossed our paths. This letter is dedicated to all those who have been instrumental in our spiritual well-being over this decade. First, God put Glen Geeting in my path to share the gospel with me back in November 1996. Later God connected us with Joe and Mika Cole, Tom and Kathy Donahue, Jerry and Lucy Condra, Roy and Stephanie Kline, Mark and Cindy Wilkinson, and, last but not least, Peter and Karen Veloz in the Fall of 1998. During this time, we started to study the Bible again.
We attended church for the first time in San Antonio, where we were eventually baptized on February 7, 1999. (Thanks, Glen, for sharing your faith with me. It was great spending time with you and your wife, Heather, and of course your beautiful kids –Max, Corinne and Madison.) In July 2000, we moved back to Washington D.C. There God put us together with Darryl and Cheron Reed and the Scott and Jill Brassfield to further our spiritual growth. God also used us to help others become disciples –my mother in-law, Carmen; my brother, Michael; Brad and Carlos. We built great friendships with Adalberto and Patricia (and their wonderful kids), Reynold, Jake (now married), Max Hutson, Leo and Nakia, Max and Judy Barragan, who were single when we met them. Others in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia also helped us love God even more, like the Walz family, the Seeley’s, Ed and Marjorie Sams, Doug Arthur, and Douglas Jacoby (yes, Doug, I did pay attention to those history classes).
My military duty brought me to Korea for a year where I met Philip Yoo and the disciples of the International Ministry of Seoul. Also during my stay, I met two young singles in Japan, Darryl and Seiko. Philip and his wife were critical in helping me to remain faithful while I was away from my wife, Veronica for a year. Thanks, also, to Steve Goolsby and the men who studied “Maximized Manhood”. It was in Seoul that I heard Bruce Williams of the L.A. International Church of Christ speak at the reunification service. It was inspiring to see the unity that was present in the fellowship (Thanks, Bruce).
After my overseas duty, God sent me to Oahu, Hawaii, where I met up with the brothers and sisters in the Oahu church. While searching for a home, I met Christopher Teves with whom we became good friends. Later we met Tui and Kiera Vaeena, Gordon and Kathy Rabacal, Rodel Gonzalez and family (Steve, Stephanie, and Salina), Adam and Joy Boziak, Matt and Duriza, Jannete and Adam Jones, Rosbin and Debbie Garcia, Kazu and Audrey, Scott and Shelly Miyashiro, Al and Jolyn, and William Parker, who I met in while in D,C. and worked with at the Pentagon after 9/11. We have many memories from the brothers and sisters in Oahu Church (My ohana forever).
Now, God has brought us to be a part of the St. Louis church. Again God has surrounded us with brothers and sisters who love God and each other. Our family group is awesome. It consists of Jim and Piper and their two wonderful daughters, Mara and Jessie (both disciples), Kellie and all the Lay kids (love you all…Chase, Misha, Madison, Makenna, Jackson, Zach and Braeden), Josh and Jennifer, Carlos and Jenny, Roger and Sarah our Becoming One class leads, Leroy from the Romans class, Dave Stubblefield and family, and, of course, John Lusk whose love for God and his church is evident. Finally, there is Roger Lamb, editor for disciplestoday.com. Disciples Today is critical for connecting disciples like myself all around the world. My prayer is that God continues to use this ministry to further his cause around the world so that Christians can connect with their brothers and sisters all around the globe. There are many other countless names not mentioned in this letter. Brothers and sisters who gave us encouragement. God’s kingdom is awesome. Through our love people will see that we are Jesus’ disciples. I am grateful to everyone for helping Veronica and I, make it to double digits. To God be the glory. Your brother,
