No one is beyond God's reach, and nothing is impossible for him. Read this inspiring story of how God used a former wrestler and criminal to rescue others.
1996 and 1997 were bitter years in my life. I had numerous traumas, my career in Greco-Roman wrestling was in a nose dive, and, to top it all, I was involved in criminal activity. But a loving God repeatedly rescued me from death. Sad to say, but many of my friends are no longer alive. Only by God’s favor am I alive today. In 1997 one of my friends and fellow wrestler, Oleg, fervently preached to me about the truth and about Christ. God touched my heart. I repented of my sins and was baptized into Christ. Only by God’s infinite favor can live today to serve Christ! From the very first day, I began to earnestly pray for my relatives, who lived on Sumy, Ukraine. Every year when I arrived on vacation, I patiently with love tried to share with them the goods new about Christ. After 8 years, the Lord touched the heart of my mother, Raisy Nikolaevny. Some sisters arrived from the city of Kharkov to study Bible with my mother. After 3 days of studying my mother was baptized in Christ. My large family moved from Kharkov to the Sumy city, and a house church was started. Mother enjoyed love and friendship of God's family. I remember her words on the phone: “Sonny, God really loves me so!” My mother brought her friends, and even my father came out to a few meetings. However, a day prior to her birthday, she “fell asleep in the Lord.” About 140 of my relatives attended the funeral along with more than 30 disciples from Kharkov city. Also, my close friends from Moscow came, too. We sang songs at the funeral a remembered my mom’s conversion. I look forward to the day when I will see her again in the eternal side of the kingdom of God. For 11 years, I prayed to God for Sasha, trusting that nothing is impossible for God. Sasha came to my wedding in Moscow. It was there that he first met disciples. Years went by. But just 2 weeks ago, he called me and said he was tired of his life. He felt he needed to be baptized so that he could have his sins forgiven. Like myself, Sasha was involved with criminal activity. So there was plenty of cost counting to be done. Yurii Koftanyuk, evangelist of the Kievan Church of Christ and Lesha, another caring brother, came from Kiev to study the Bible with my friend Sasha. After a week, he moved to Kiev in order to continue his Bible studies. He rapidly came to understand what it meant to be a disciple of Jesus. I am thankful to God for his desire to rescue sinners from the world. On Sunday on November, 30, Sasha was a baptized in Christ. This was truly a miracle! I could not believe my own eyes. 70 disciples came out to his baptism. Also my cousin, Artem, who also works in Kiev, and the daughter of my brother, Dasha, came to the baptism from Sumy city. When Sasha was asked to say a few words, he said, “Goodbye death and long live life!” Now I will be able to pray for my relatives with my brother in Christ. Thanks to God that His favor and love never weaken. Although years go by, God does not change. We only need to keep believing that nothing is impossible for God. And to God be the glory! Sergey Kononenko, evangelist of Moscow Church of Christ
