In a tragic boating accident in August, a young mother died while rescuing her two-year-old son from drowning.
It is an amazing story of heroism. According to a news report, 33-year-old Chelsey Russell jumped into Lake Powell after her son fell into the water while on a moving houseboat. He was not wearing a life jacket and neither was his mom. Russell grabbed her son and was able to hold his head above the water long enough for him to be rescued before she drowned and slipped further under the water.
Irrespective of the fact that most of the high volume selling Christian books and commentaries are written by denominational authors, we are blessed in Christ's church to have the absolute best resources in the world written by fellow believers! One example of this is Jimmy Allen's book Back on Track.
Deuteronomy 3:26-28: But because of you the Lord was angry with me and would not listen to me. "That is enough," the Lord said. "Do not speak to me anymore about this matter. Go up to the top of Pisgah and look west and north and south and east. Look at the land with your own eyes, since you are not going to cross this Jordan. But commission Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him, for he will lead this people across and will cause them to inherit the land that you will see."
"Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown" -- Luke 8:7-8.
In Moses’ account from Deuteronomy 1, the Lord records one of the most curious Bible factoids you could ever imagine. From the starting point at Mount Horeb (at right) to the destination the Israelites ended up 40 years later, the trip was described in Deuteronomy 1:2 as an 11-day journey! Wow! In other words, just past the shores of the Red Sea from Mount Horeb, to Canaan’s land is an 11-day journey by foot. And yet the Israelites wandered 40 years in the desert to get from point A to point B!
Have you been stuck each morning wondering what to read in the Bible? Perhaps you’ve opened your Bible on a windy day, hoping the pages turn themselves to the right scripture. Maybe you started reading Song of Solomon because you’re really into music, or you’re flipping aimlessly through the Psalms because they’re quick and enriching.
Disciples in at least five countries are one-third of the way through the 30-day Bible challenge! A Bible Talk in Malaysia is reading the plan together, along with people in Canada, the US, Switzerland, and South Africa.
Are you thinking of reading through the Bible this year? Consider joining me in my 30-day "Through The Bible" plan. Especially if you're an avid reader, exploring the entire Bible in a short amount of time illuminates the unchanging nature of God, the theme of the Gospel, and the wonderful truth of Jesus, in both testaments.
Anyone who wants to work on improving their relationship with God must surely try to understand him better, try to find out what is important to him, and if possible, the reason, "Why?"
About 20 years ago, soon after I was baptized, I struggled with the big why question: “Why does God expect so much from us and yet seems to accept so little?” I had just read a DPI book called First...the Kingdom. It was a verse by verse analysis of the greatest and most challenging message that Jesus ever preached, the Sermon on the Mount.
I love New England! The people, the cities, the sports teams, the amazing food! Hiking a mountain one day, camping in the forest the next and relaxing at the beach the following day! There is no place quite like it in the world. My wife and I love it here!
